Cedar Chapel Special School is a warm, nurturing environment where everyone is committed to providing the best opportunities for our students to learn. We prepare our students with moderate and severe disabilities between the ages of 3 to 21 to be included in regular schools, to become gainfully employed, and to be self-sufficient in their homes and communities.

We currently serve 49 students who live in all parts of Worcester County. Our students participate in such activities as Special Olympics, Science Fair, Book It, Christmas Parades, Tech Fest, Fine Arts Festival, music programs, various inclusion opportunities, and vocational training in school and out in the community.

Our students participate in Alternate Maryland Assessment, (ALT-MSA), the alternate assessment for students with disabilities. Following the guidelines of the Voluntary State Curriculum, reading and math skills are assessed based on daily individual instruction. Our staff is very proud of its assessment results as our students' scores continue to be well above the state average each year.

We foster an environment of change through a Strategic Planning Process of School Improvement guided by the Middle States Association. Our plan is focused around three objectives:

to improve student performance

to access community resources

to demonstrate career-planning skills

We are very proud of:
  • the fact that our school is the only special school in the state of Maryland to be accredited by the Middle States Association
  • all of our students who tested in the Alternative Maryland School Assessment (MSA) program for scoring at the Advanced Level
  • our Adapted Aquatics Program

  • all of our Special Olympians
  • the Work Experience and Transition Program

Our dynamic faculty and staff are committed to building positive relations and collaboration with parents and community. We are fortunate to have an active School Improvement Advisory Committee that works with the school to address the school's needs and to help with
fundraisers that support school activities and events.
